English Fizz – Update

On the 9th July I will be doing going on a short study tour and tasting of presumably and arguably the Top 10 English Fizz producers in the UK. Through friends I have managed to arrange a detailed visit and route which I am looking forward to – to taste and getting an update. Some four years ago I have been to some of these producers and knowing that so much has changed in the time – it is time to catch up with them.

The producers I will visit and report back on will be:

  • Acre Hill Estate – Richard Morris
  • Exton Park Vineyard – Fred Langdale & Corinne Seely
  • Hattingley Valley – Emma Rice
  • Coates & Seely
  • Nyetimber – Cherie Spriggs
  • Wiston – Dermot Surgue
  • Ridgeview – Simon Roberts
  • Breaky Bottom – Peter Hall
  • Rathfinny Estate – Jonathan Medard
  • Gusbourne – Charlie Holland
  • Hush Heath – Victoria

With two Champagne Houses that has recently invested in some vineyards in the UK, these producers are enjoying the benefit of these investments.

Earlier this year Michelin Star UK chef Roger Jones, arranged over 24 local MCC’s and UK Sparkling Wines to be sampled and scored.  Pieter ‘Bubbles’ Ferreira from Graham Beck led the South African team of judges while Richard Morris of Ancre Hill Estate in Wales led the Wales and UK team. This was held at The Vineyard Hotel in Newlands, Cape Town.

‘Bubbles’ Ferreira took the SA team to victory with 8 of the 11 blind tastings going in SA’s favour and also claimed the overall win on the night for his Graham Beck’s Cuveé Clive. Said Roger Jones about the evening, “It was not ultimately about winning. But the idea behind the evening was more to highlight the enormous steps UK sparkling wine has taken in recent years, as well as put more of an international spotlight on South African MCC”.

I cannot wait to give feedback, once I have been there and to meet up with friends on the other side.

A right royal love affair – global glitterati go gaga for Graham Beck bubbles

A right royal love affair – global glitterati go gaga for Graham Beck bubbles

The next time you’re raising a glass of Graham Beck Cap Classique be assured you’re in good company! It remains the bubbly of choice for global icons celebrating admirable achievements and memorable milestones. Most recently the Graham Beck Blanc de Blancs 2008 was served as part of the lavish wedding banquet of Princess Madeleine of Sweden, proving yet again that this is indeed the fizz with five-star flair.

From Madiba magic to Obama mania – Graham Beck Brut has been selected to toast some of history’s most defining moments. In 1994 it was chosen as the celebratory drink at the inauguration of South Africa’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela. Following in Tata’s hallowed footsteps, In August 2008, Barack Obama was declared nominee of the Democratic Party for the presidential election. His wife, Michelle, selected Graham Beck Brut NV to celebrate his nomination at a private function at their Chicago home on the eve of his nomination.

Not only the sip of choice for statesmen, Graham Beck also finds favour with one of the world’s leading super-spies. In the latest James Bond bestseller, author Jeffery Deaver has the dashing daredevil forgo his famous martini for a glass of Cuveé Clive, the estate’s flagship bubbly. From international men of mystery to the UK’s First Family – once again Graham Beck stole the limelight when Britain’s Prince Harry and his guests also enjoyed Graham Beck Brut at a recent fund raising Gala Dinner in Johannesburg to toast the success of the Prince’s Sentebale charity initiative.

Nobody can resist a royal wedding and the world was treated once again to a fairytale ceremony when Sweden’s Princess Madeleine married her prince charming on the 8th of June 2013. For the sumptuous wedding feast King Carl Gustav himself selected none other than the Graham Beck Blanc de Blancs 2008 to accompany the delicious gourmet delicacies. This latest feather in the cap for the passionate winemaking team at Graham Beck proves yet again that these internationally renowned bubblies are indisputably on par with the iconic French Champagne houses.

The Blanc de Blancs forms part of the exclusive range of expertly crafted Graham Beck MCC’s – superior quality sparkling wines produced in the age-old tradition, utilizing cutting edge techniques which result in wines with supreme finesse, consummate elegance and infinite appeal.

Produced from 100% Chardonnay, this delicious and versatile bubbly combines rich creamy aromas with hints of fresh lime on the nose. On the palate you can expect an exhilarating yet fine mousse with an explosion of juicy tangerines. Great brioche and yeast complexity broadens the palate leading to a long, elegant finish.

The fruit for this wine was hand selected from the limestone vineyards on Graham Beck’s Robertson estate. These vines benefit from the high natural lime content in the soil, which ensures a low pH and high natural acidity in the young base wines. Once in the state-of-the-art Méthode Cap Classique cellar whole bunch pressing ensures an even finer bubble.

Only the cuvée juice (premium quality juice) is selected for fermentation. Of the cuvée, 50% is fermented in specific Piece Champenoise 205 litre barrels to ensure richness and an extra dimension of flavour and creaminess. After fermentation the wine in barrel is selectively blended with other parcels of the very best stainless steel fermented Chardonnay. The final blended base wine is then bottled for the second fermentation with yeast contact of at least 36 months before degorgement. The Blanc de Blancs remains an undisputed favourite, a darling amongst the legion of Graham Beck bubbly fans and testimony to the outstanding Cap Classique terroir characteristics of the Robertson estate.

So, it appears then that princes, princesses and presidents all agree that Graham Beck MCC is indeed the bubbly to beat when it comes to toasting the good life and commemorating life’s most cherished highlights.

Swartland Revolution – It is HERE!

It’s (pretty much) here.

Believe it or not, the much anticipated Revolutionary weekend is upon us.

As you start to pack your bag with excitement, allow us to add a few items to your survival pack.

Bring sunblock, sunglasses (for the sensitive eyes) and a lekker hat.

It is hot. You will be learning just as much about the soil as the sun of the appellation.

Friday night’s BBQ is outside, like any real braai, and it can get chilly (read: windy) so bring a jacket and a (SR2011) scarf.

New (and old) revolutionaries should read what the veterans at Batonage say in their excellent post: A survival guide to a revolution: The Swartland Revolution 2012

“Nobody “attends” a revolution; you live through it and you experience it.”

With advice on wardrobe, pharmaceuticals, your liver, Babbelaas Burgers and Social Media they conclude: “Arrive in whatever mood you feel like… you will leave in a jovial, relaxed and revolutionary mood.”

REGISTRATION, on the legendary Stoep of The Royal Hotel, starts at 4pm Friday. It is over at 5.30pm, we want to start tasting! Make sure you know UNDER WHO’S NAME your ticket is booked.

You will receive a neck tag that you must wear all weekend to enter tastings and events. Wristbands for MEAL ONLY TICKET HOLDERS must also be collected during this time.

SHUTTLES at previous events revolutionaries have hassled us for shuttles to get home, this year I organised it but they received to few bookings to warrent the trip .This is your last chance to try get them there! BOOK NOW> arrive alive.

And lastly, as you get ready to come to our lovely patch of earth, please

step away from your perfumes, aftershaves and lipsticks.

(The sharp scents interfere with your tasting experience and the lipstick makes the glasses hard to wash. Simple as that)

We look forward to welcoming you!

From Durban to Deutschland and anywhere else, travel safe and see you at the Royal!

Excited Helena
